Silk Scarf Dying for Beginners

Dying silk scarves is a marvelous way to immerse yourself in color. It's a fun hobby and it's very easy to get started. Check out our photo tutorial and learn how to dye your first silk scarf!

 

Materials

  • 1 Silk Scarf
  • 3 colors silk dye
  • water
  • (2) 1 gallon ziploc bags
  • Clear ketchup bottle
  • rubber bands
  • large plastic cylinder
  • Cardboard/table covering to prevent mess

 

1) Get yourself a gallon ziploc bag. Make sure it's a good one that closes tight or your silk scarf won't be the only thing changing colors.

2) Add a few drops of dye according to how deep you want the color to saturate the scarf.

3) Put the scarf in the bag with the dye.

4) Smush the scarf around to make sure it gets entirely moistened by the dyewater.

5) Close the Ziploc Bag and Fondle to ensure proper dye distribution.

6) Fondle some more.

7) Let the dye sit overnight. You know it's finished when all of the dye has stuck to the scarf and there's not so much of it left in the dye water.

8) Take the scarf out of the bag and hang it to dry.

9) Find a big plastic tube and wrap the scarf around it. We used the tube off a leaf blower. Use rubber bands to hold it in place. Keep in mind that the placement of the rubber bands will have an effect on the finished design.

 10) Go Crazy with the Rubber Bands! Then get a nifty ketchup bottle and put in a darker saturation of your desired color.

11) Apply the new color in stripes

12) Be sure to go all around the tube.

13) Do the same with another color.

14) Let it sit overnight

 15) Push the scarf off of the tube

16) Admire your handiwork and hand the scarf to dry.
